Effective Study Tips

Studying can be really difficult, especially w hen juggling a full-time job and commitments outside of work. These tips will help you to reframe and refocus in order to make studying more effective

Study better, not for longer

One of the biggest attributes to effective study is having a positive mindset. Self-belief and positivity will help you to learn more effectively and perform at your best, this is especially important if you’ve failed an exam.

In order to make you feel more confident and prepared, try some of our more practical tips outlined below.

  • Do you prefer to study before or after work? Think about what works best for you and dedicate time consistently to studying each day.

  • What do you need to accomplish each day or each week? Knowing the desired outcome will give your study sessions purpose.

What is more important to learn or understand? Often it’s not possible to do everything, so planning will help you prioritise.

  • If you can, try to ensure it is clutter free, without visual/noise distractions and has everything you need within reach.

This might be particularly important if you’re in an environment with lots of distractions, or if you have some caring responsibilities.

Try to also take a break from your phone whilst studying in order to concentrate fully. Looking at your phone can always be part of your reward after a successful study session.

  • It’s important to still prioritise your wellbeing when studying and taking regular beaks can help with that.

An effective technique is 25 minutes studying and a 5 minute break, with a longer break after 2 hours.

  • Varying your study techniques will help you to learn what works best for you and may also help you retain more information.

Try combining reading, note-taking, watching videos, creating flashcards, sketching mind maps, and doing quizzes.

If you get stuck on something, why not discuss it with a friend, colleague or tutor?
