World Mental Health Day: 6 Ways to Improve Day-to-Day Corporate Life
Working in the corporate world is often high pressure, fast paced and intense. There are some well-known wellbeing-killers which can creep into our everyday corporate lives but can have a profound effect on our mental health in the long term.
Here are six areas where you can make small changes to greatly improve your day-to-day:
🗓️ Stop accepting or arranging meetings that will mean you are back to back for most of the day. Can you make internal meetings shorter? Do you even need to be in that meeting? Can you spread them out?
⏳ Ensure client meetings have agendas. Not only will this put the client at ease as they know what to expect, but it allows you to structure your meetings well and keep to time.
⏰ Please please please don't let meetings overrun. Even internal ones. It throws everyone off for the rest of the day. If you are leading/chairing the meeting, take control.
🆕 Ensure your team's ways of working are documented to support a smooth induction process for new joiners. The number of times we've seen people work at a company for over 8 months before they understand the big picture or the whole process start to finish.
🍷 We love a drink. We love a work social. We do not love it when they get out of hand and people start acting inappropriately or embarrassingly. Leaders, communicate expected behaviours beforehand and take action if anyone crosses a line.
😭 Discrimination and bullying is obviously awful and unacceptable. If you are at the bad end of one or both of these, report it to HR. If you are at the other end, know that people talk to each other and it will likely be well-known in the team. Please educate yourself and change your actions.
Is there anything else you would add to this? Let us know in the comments!
