How to Set Achievable Goals
We can all set goals, but how can we ensure we work towards them effectively?
Use the SMART Framework
This is a great way to create your goals. Try to check-in from time to see to monitor your progress.
Specific: Instead of "Get fit," say "Run 3 times a week for 30 minutes."
Measurable: "Gain 10 pounds" rather than "Gain muscle."
Achievable: Set realistic targets
Relevant: Align with your values and aspirations
Time-bound: "Read 12 books by December 31st."
Break Goals into Smaller Steps
Breaking down goals into manageable steps will make them more achievable. For example: If your goal is to write a book, break it down into "Outline the chapters," "Write 500 words a day," and "Edit one chapter per week."
Plan for Obstacles
Anticipate potential challenges. What could go wrong? What will take you off track? Thinking about this at the start will allow you to be better prepared when obstacles do present themselves. Why not set reminders for yourself or partner with an accountability buddy? Accountability is crucial for reaching your goals.
Celebrate Wins and Stay Flexible
Even small achievements deserve recognition and this will boost your motivation to keep going. Focus on progress, not perfection as well. All progress is progress, you don’t need to get it right first time.
What else would you add to this to ensure you set achievable goals and reach them?
