Reviewing a mock exam properly is one of the most powerful tools for improving. The key is to move beyond checking right vs. wrong and instead extract learning and patterns.
1. Look out for the following
Knowledge gaps
Time management issues
Misinterpretation of questions
Poor exam technique
2. Note where you lost marks
Did I not know the content?
Did I know it but misinterpret the requirement?
Did I run out of time or rush?
Did I misread the verb (e.g., "evaluate" vs "explain")?
3. Deep Dive into Examiner Feedback
Where are marks awarded?
Read each marker comment carefully—even positive ones.
If you don’t understand, ask your tutor/marker.
4. Evaluate Your Exam Technique
Did you spend the right amount of time per section?
Did you plan your long-form answers or jump straight in?
Were your workings clear and structured?
5. Re-attempt Key Parts
Rewrite the answer/s you underperformed on without looking at the answers.
6. Action Plan
Finish your review by listing concrete next steps.
e.g revise topic X (e.g. leases under IFRS 16)
Practice two time-pressured questions per week
Work on written answer planning
